Tim passes motion on disability

by aldc on 23 October, 2015

Cambridge City Council has unanimously passed a policy motion from Tim Moore, agreeing the City should not discriminate against citizens with disability of any form, and will actively seek to reduce such discrimination in all publicly accessible areas. A large number of residents become more disabled with age, and some have significant problems with their sight, hearing, walking and mental abilities. Most of these problems can’t be easily recognised visually.

To achieve this, the City, including the Council, businesses, Universities, Schools, NHS and its residents, will be asked to help by working together to solve our disabled access problems.

There are too many problems to list, but imagine your sight is poor, hearing bad, or you can only walk slowly or use a wheelchair. Cyclists on the pavement can cause fear, falls and collisions – you don’t feel safe to go out. On the pavement you walk into wheelie bins, parked vehicles or unexpected safety barriers. You trip over things left on the pavement, potholes, bollards, and A-boards. Think disability.
